Prototype for Vimla2.0 app concept

The brief

General Design sprint format

The brief is about client Vimla, who wants Hyper Island UX students to take on a challenge to apply Design sprint and come up with a concept of the product that can be part of their Vimla 2.0 app for 2020.

Duration: 5 days, 5 people

My role: I mainly participated in research, wireframes, parts of UI design.

Methods: User personas, User research, Interviews, Prototyping, Design Sprint

Tools: Adobe XD, Microsoft Presentation

Background

Vimla 2.0 is within the Vimla company that was launched back in 2018 July. It is aimed to explore better ways to improve the overall user experience through filtering. The client aims to expand this type of concept to improve even more UX and possibly have several key features that bring a meaningful, connecting experience with users.

Research (day 1)

We followed the basic principles. What do we know right now and assume? We made a few questions to have in our mind then ran a focus group to ask a general question of frustration in using mobile phones. The most common pain points of using phones were that they were addicted to smartphones and hated when data runs out unexpectedly. We decided to go with the lack of data as we felt that solving phone addiction through filter apps will not necessarily solve phone addiction problems.

After the client meeting, we defined the target age group as 15 to 25 as the majority of users were students within that range. We then ran 5 interviews one-on-one and asked specifically when they felt frustrated in a lack of data situations to get deeper insights. Here are the results:

1.Users need data when traveling alone.

2. Users need data when they are in emergency situations.

3. Users need data when they must inform their families and friends on time.

Ideation (day 2 & day 3)

We started to build user personas based on the research we collected. We built scenarios that can be a possible situation where users need data when it's running out. Created a fictional character named Vilma and tried to put a detailed description of her needs, pain points, source of data usage, the context of the situation.

User persona

We decided as a group that borrowing data for the following month will be a solution to our user problem. You borrow up to 3 times when needed for free, but after that, you have to have 50 kronor more to refill the 3 times free usage. This plan only works when you are a monthly subscribed Vimla user. We wireframed and prototyped ourselves individually, then selected the most visually complete design and decided to go with that one and made a hi-fi prototype.

Final delivery (Day 4)

User testing and Results (day 5)

As mentioned previously, we tested a total of 5 people, and here are key takeaways:

Design aspects: Nice UI design, simple and visually good.

Usability aspects: Little bit complicated and unclear with why the Recharge page for buying a different subscription is necessary when the concept is about ‘Borrowing data’

Overall Feedback: Nice design, good idea but maybe having only borrowing data section and simplify even more with the UX process would be really helpful.

Retrospective

The most obvious challenge — creating a new user problem and a solution to it, the lack of time to deepen and iterate this project was a pity.

What can be improved?

I think that next time I would implement a strict schedule that we could all follow together from the beginning. This would help to keep us on track and focused on the task at hand and get things done. Additionally, I would have liked to conduct more interviews to verify our assumptions and discuss more with our client to gain more insights and feedback about how we could improve our solution.

Would I do this again?

Absolutely! This was a valuable experience that allowed me to practice my UX skills, team management, and the importance of empathy not only for users but within the team to create more understanding and shared values among members.

Thank you so much to Vimla for this opportunity!
